 Introduction
KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE Capture Software provides a production-ready application
to integrate any of Kodak's production document scanners into Digital Document
Management Systems. Capture Software eliminates the need to devote extensive
development resources to customized image capture software. It simplifies
the preparation and transfer of batches of images to an imaging application,
magnetic storage, or CD authoring, complete with associated index data.
Multiple versions of Capture Software are available to complement the capabilities
of specific scanner models:
- Low-Volume Capture Software supports Scanners 1500
and 2500
- Mid-Volume Capture Software supports Scanners 3500
and 3510
- High-Volume Capture Software supports Document Scanners
5500, 7500, 9500, and Scanner/Microimager 990
- A new version of Mid-Volume Capture Software to be released during
the fourth quarter of 1999 will also support color scanning using the
KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE Color Scanner 3590C
KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE Capture Software is designed for speed, accuracy,
and ease of use. It enables optimum scanner throughput and maximum operator
productivity. A high-speed, multi-page display presents images de-skewed
and auto-cropped for legibility. A complete set of icon-based tools is available
at a mouse click to simplify scanning management.
Capture Software is a 32-bit program that takes full advantage of the superior
performance of fast single and multi-processor PCs under the Microsoft
Windows NT Operating Environment. Meanwhile, the icon-based toolbar,
context-sensitive menus, and the on-line tool tips reduce the need for training
and memorization. Capture Software can also be used under the Microsoft
Windows 95 and 98 Operating Environment.

Capture Software maximizes your capture throughput by minimizing the need
for operator involvement to make images available to your imaging system,
CD authoring, or scan-to-Web applications.
- Multi-image display shows up to eight images at a
time, making it easier to visualize a multi-page document and enable
image quality verification during scanning.
- Fast image-fit mode performs dynamic zooming to show
every image as large as possible in each window.
- Auto cropping eliminates black borders from around
images, enabling users to scan mixed-size originals without changing
any scanning parameters.
- Automatic deskew straightens images on-the-fly during
scanning to minimize post-scan editing.
- Auto rotation (90&#deg;, 180&#deg;, 270&#deg;) supports
landscape scanning to maximize scanner throughput.
- Auto blank page deletion during scanning or post-processing
eliminates the need to presort batches into single- and double-sided
originals.
- Blank Page Separation allows batch and document separation
or automatic creation of an attachment by inserting a blank page before
the batch, document or attachment.
- Image manipulation and editing tools let users rescan,
rotate, reorder, and delete pages.
- Merge front and rear combines both sides of a page
into a single image immediately visible on the screen.
- Split front and rear splits very long documents into
smaller images, two per side (total of four) or three per side (total
of six), to simplify OCR processing of survey, census, application forms,
etc. For example, the software can automatically convert one A3 page
into two A4 pages. The effect is visible on the screen immediately.
- User profiles and profile groups to control access
to specific applications and Capture Software features and capabilities.

- Barcode values can be used as index fields, document
and batch separators and to trigger the creation of an attachment; images
can be rotated based on the orientation of the barcode for consistent
and correct orientation of the image
- Software patch code reader, reading type 2, type
3 and type T patch codes. Separation level and deletion or saving of
image can be configured per patch code type.
- Automatic detection of the scanner's SCSI ID making
Capture Software's installation "Plug and Scan".
Fast Flexible Indexing
A choice of indexing options allows you to configure indexing according
to the requirements of your application. You can capture index data
from bar codes while scanning, or key enter data from images or
original documents. Automatic data capture from bar codes drastically reduces
the need to perform key entry from scanned images or originals.
Capture Software allows to define up to 10 different index fields
with each a length of up to 100 positions. Fields can be defined as text,
date or numeric fields. An extensive range of default values is available
to populate index fields automatically. Examples : scan date and time, operator
name, batch name, document number, page setup name, etc.
The index can be sent to your imaging application and/or written
directly to a CD, complete with a viewer and retrieval application.
The resulting self-contained "image system on a disc"can be stored,
distributed, or easily duplicated as an alternative for traditional micro-publishing
applications. The free CD viewer (CDVue) is available in 9 languages (Dansk,
Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Italiano, Nederlands, Português dol
Brasil and Svenska).
Enhanced index options enable you to split a bar code value
over several fields or combine several default or bar code values in one.
The special [Last Value] default value allows to duplicate a field until
it is manually changed or automatically changed by means of a bar code.
Capture Software also supports field validity through mask formulas and
check digit exits.
Use Capture Software as a scannerless indexing station
to index batches created with a scan station running Capture Software. Any
of the Capture Software types can be configured as a standalone indexing
station, but usually the least expensive LVCS version will be selected to
perform indexing or index correction.

It is recognized that the KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE Scanners will be sold and
utilized by firms with multiple remote locations. Accordingly, Capture Software
will be available for discounted sale to single users with multiple sites.
